LocoTech to implement a smart repair management system

At the InnoTrans 2018 international railway exhibition, LocoTech Group of companies and Clover Group announced the beginning of the implementation of SmartMaintenance ("Digital dispatching") for the transition to managing repairs of traction rolling stock using artificial intelligence technologies.

"We plan to launch the solution in November 2018 at the Eastern branch, specifically at the service locomotive depot in Vikhorevka. By the final stages of the project, we will already be able to confirm the specific economic indicators. We are planning to implement the system by the end of January 2019," Alexei Belinsky, Chairman of the Board of Directors of LocoTech, said.

SmartMaintenance is based on data obtained from the Smart Locomotive system with regard to the actual and predicted technical condition of equipment. The system was launched at LocoTech in 2016 and currently operates on 6,400 sections of locomotives in 40 service locomotive depots. The solution allows for analyzing 23 types of locomotive equipment and detects more than 60 types of malfunctions in the operation of equipment. The time taken to carry out diagnostics of the locomotive in the system was reduced from 2 hours to 5 minutes.

SmartMaintenance automatically evaluates and predicts the technical condition of the locomotive components and assemblies, and proposes the most optimal solution in terms of service time and volume. This solution transforms the usual approaches to maintenance and repair (MRO), allowing you to manage the process in real time according to its status.

"For the effective management of the company, the director needs to know the technical condition of the entire fleet of equipment, and rate the equipment in terms of risk. As the equipment wears out, it is necessary to properly manage and plan repairs. SmartMaintenance solves these problems automatically using artificial intelligence — this is the logical extension of the Smart Locomotive system, which transforms habitual maintenance into a repair mode according to its status," Denis Kasimov, CEO of Clover Group, noted.

During the implementation period, changes are planned for the business processes of the service company, including integration with existing IT architecture, updating job duties, and training personnel. SmartMaintenance will be integrated with the ERP system to automatically generate a repair plan for the fleet of vehicles.


InnoTrans is the world’s largest railway trade fair for transport equipment and transport systems. It is held every two years in the Messe Berlin exposition center in Berlin. This year the exhibition is being held on September 18–21. The participants of the exhibition include global corporations, leaders in the field of railway transport, and major operators and manufacturers of rolling stock.

The first trade fair was held in 1996, and since then it has received the status as the most authoritative communication platform for leaders of railway companies and industry specialists.
